Decadeworthy - SYTYCDWorthy: Ranking The Top 10 Dancers

Okay, so I know So You Think You Can Dance hasn't been around that long. In fact, it only started halfway through the decade in 2005 (technically, halfway + 1 year actually) but it's been a big part of MY decade so to start off my Decadeworthy lists, here's me, trying to rank ALL the Top 10 SYTYCD dancers from both USA and Canada (except Season 1 because I only sporadically watched and can't remember anybody anymore). (To see this post in LIST FORMAT without videos and extra commentary for easier reading, CLICK HERE)

This is not the BEST dancers ranking. This is MY ranking. Part best, part favorite, part crushworthy. So yes, cute boys might get bonus points for being cute boys. I know it's not fair but it's how my libido works.

If you've read my SYTYCD recaps, I tend to be a little nice and see things with rose-coloured glasses. I'm just like that. I try to see the positive in people. But piss me off, and I hold a grudge forever. Which should explain a particular low ranking of a technically great dancer.

I've also go to say, this was WAY harder than I thought it was going to be. We've been pretty good at weeding out lesser dancers to form a great Top 10, because there wasn't a lot of fat to cut. When I tried first separating into 3 groups (Best, Mid, Worst), there were very few in the Worst list and Best list was HUGE. So some good dancers will rank low just be default.

There's also a heavy lean on Contemporary dancers but that's partly because the show gears toward them. Of 71 dancers (*Since Comfort Fedoke returned to the Top 10 to replace injured Jessica King in S4, so thus both are counted), there are 42 that are identified as Contemporary/Jazz dancers. 12 Hip-Hoppers, 12 Ballroom dancers (Latin and Salsa included), 3 Breakdancers, 2 Ballet dancers, 1 Broadway, 1 B-boy/Popper, 1 Krumper, and 1 Tap dancer. (Some numbers overlap since several dancers are identified with two styles).

So while I thought these dancers should have been in the Top 10:
Francis Lafreniere - Canada Season 1 Top 12
Lara Smythe - Canada Season 1 Top 12
Daniel Dory - Canada Season 2 Top 12
Musa Cooper - USA Season 2 Top 12
Hokuto "Hok" Konishi - USA Season 3 Top 12
Karen Hauer - USA Season 6 Top 12

Here's the final list of all the Top 10 dancers from Seasons 2-6 of SYTYCD (USA) and Season 1-2 of SYTYCDCanada: (I've included videos when I can as a dance sample for each dancer. I couldn't always find my favorites though. Most are just what's left and around now.)(To see this post in LIST FORMAT without videos and extra commentary for easier reading, CLICK HERE)

71. Jessica King (Contemporary) - USA Season 4 - Top 10.5*
On top of the fact that she was injured and didn't actually dance the Top 10, I never really liked her in the first place.

70. Emanuel Sandhu (Contemporary/Ballet) - Canada Season 2 Top 6
I'll admit he had some great dances and technically was pretty strong but he irked me.
With Kim Gringas - Jazz Funk by Blake McGrath - "Love Sex Magic" - Ciara feat. Justin Timberlake

69. Amy Gardner (Contemporary) - Canada Season 2 Top 10
I felt that her Top 20 partner Vincent Desjardins got her into the finals. She's a good dancer but I keep forgetting about her.
With Vincent Desjardins - Hip-Hop by Flii Stylz - "Boom Boom Pow" - The Black Eyed Peas

68. Izaak Smith (Contemporary/Hip-Hop) - Canada Season 1 Top 6
Kid was cute but became more irritating as he kept passing better dancers and survived on his cuteness alone.
With Kaitlyn Fitzgerald - Dancehall by Jaeblaze - "Click Mi Finger" - Erup

67. Comfort Fedoke (Hip-Hop) - USA Season 4 Top 8
I like Comfort but she just didn't do that well outside her style.
With Twitch - Hip-Hop by Dave Scott - "Forever" - Chris Brown

66. Danny Tidwell (Contemporary) - USA Season 3 Runner-Up
Technically a great dancer but a horrible partner and I just couldn't stand him. I have since seen him almost completely drop his partner in Broadway's Memphis. Again, he's a horrible partner. All he does is makes sure HE looks good.
With Lauren Gottlieb - Contemporary by Mia Michaels - "Then You Look At Me" - Celine Dion

65. Ryan Rankine (Contemporary) - USA Season 2 Top 8
Good dancer that I just keep forgetting was in the Top 10.
With Heidi Groskreutz - Cuban Rumba by Alex Da Silva - "Rumba del Solar"—Angelo Rodriguez

64. Kaitlyn Fitzgerald (Contemporary) - Canada Season 1 Top 10
A nice dancer who peaked too late.

63. Noelle Marsh (Contemporary) - USA Season 6 Top 10
A nice dancer who never quite got to shine.
With Ryan Di Lello - Hip-Hop by Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo - "Give It To Me Right" - Melanie Fiona

62. Martha Nichols (Contemporary) - USA Season 2 Top 10
Came out strong in Top 20 but sort of lost her zeal as the competition went along.
With Travis Wall - Fox Trot by Jean-Marc Généreux - "Witchcraft" - Steve Tyrell

61. Natalli Reznik (Latin Ballroom) - Canada Season 1 Fourth Place
Her counterpart Francis Lafreniere was a stronger dancer but didn't make the Top 10, but Natalli was good, but I just found she was generally overshadowed by her stronger male partners.
With Nico Archambault - Disco by Melissa Williams - "Knock on Wood"—Amii Stewart

60. Cody Bonnell (Hip-Hop) - Canada Season 2 Top 8
He never quite made the growth we had hoped, but he's great at what he does and he's got that youthful energy.
With Melanie Mah - Hip-Hop by Luther Brown - "Turnin Me On" - Keri Hilson feat. Lil Wayne

59. Jaimie Goodwin (Contemporary) - USA Season 3 Top 10
A wonderful dancer that I always forget about, unless it's with Hok.
With Hok Konishi - Jazz by Wade Robson - "The Chairman's Waltz" Memoirs of a Geisha (soundtrack)

58. Kūpono Aweau (Contemporary) - USA Season 5 Top 10
Loved his kooky style although I felt he didn't come into his own just yet. If he had more time, he might have.
With Kayla Radomski - Contemporary by Mia Michaels - "Gravity" - Sara Bareilles

57. Ashleigh Di Lello (Latin Ballroom) - USA Season 6 Fifth Place
A good dancer who manages to keep up with her better partners, which is still saying something.
With Jakob Karr - Hip-Hop by Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo - "Whatcha Say" - Jason DeRulo

56. Mollee Gray (Jazz/Contemporary) - USA Season 6 Top 8
Terrific solos that manage to make her more grown up.
With Jakob Karr - Broadway by Joey Dowling - "Easy Street" - Annie (soundtrack) (Samantha Ronson remix)

55. Jason Glover (Contemporary) - USA Season 5 Top 8
Solid dancer who tended to get overshadowed by partner, but was still lovely himself.
With Jeanine Mason - Contemporary by Travis Wall - "If It Kills Me" - Jason Mraz

54. Kherington Payne (Contemporary) - USA Season 4 Top 10
Love her or hate her, she had presence.
With Twitch - Contemporary by Mia MIchaels - "Dreaming With a Broken Heart" - John Mayer

53. Brandon Bryant (Contemporary) - USA Season 5 Runner-Up
A great technical dancer, but like Mia, I didn't totally buy his personality change between S4 and S5 and I totally blame him for making Mia leave (whether that is true or not).
With Jeanine Mason - Pop Jazz by Laurie Anne Gibson - "Battlefield" - Jordin Sparks

52. Nathan Trasoras (Contemporary/Hip-Hop) - USA Season 6 Top 10
Amazing solos that made up for some immature partnering.
Solo - "Golden Train" - Justin Nozuka

51. Randi Evans (Contemporary) - USA Season 5 Top 10
With Evan Kasprzak - Contemporary by Mia Michaels - "Koop Island Blues" - Koop feat. Ane Brun

50. Stephen "Twitch" Boss (Hip-Hop) - USA Season 4 Runner-Up
Love Twitch but I actually didn't think his technique or solos were as good as everyone else though they were, but his passion made up for it.
With Chelsie Hightower - Hip-Hop by Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo - "Control"—Vitamin String Quartet

49. Chelsie Hightower (Latin Ballroom) - USA Season 4 Top 6
With Mark Kanemura - Salsa by Alex da Silva - "Fuego" - Joe Bataan

42. Lauren Gottlieb (Contemporary) - USA Season 3 Top 6
With Pasha Kovalev - Hip-Hop by Shane Sparks - "Fuego" - Pitbull

41. William Wingfield (Contemporary) - USA Season 4 Top 8
Such a strong technical dancer with so much likability, but failed to somehow combine the two on the dancefloor in the time he had. I think if he had more time, he would have.
With Katee Shean - Contemporary Pas de deux by Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson - "Imagine" - David Archuleta

40. Evan Kasprzak (Broadway) - USA Season 5 Third Place
I know there's been the backlash against Evan but he's great at what he does (especially his solos) and he's got that puppydog 'aw shucks' personality that wins me over.
With Melissa Sandvig - Broadway by Tyce DiOrio - "Get Me To The Church On Time" - Matt Dusk (from My Fair Lady)

With Everett Smith - Jazz Fusion by Sean Cheesman -

Wow Vance. Just wow. I can't believe how much work you put into this post - what an undertaking. Thanks.
You had some surprises on here; some that I agree with (Yay! Pasha and Lacey's waltz) and others that I wouldn't have ranked as high (I think I'm the only person that wasn't that gaga over Brandon and Jeanine's Paso).
Also, it's a shame you don't have any US Season 1 people on your list. No Blake McGrath? Or my boyfriend Artem Chigvintsev?
Anyway, this was fun.

Actually, Brandon and Jeanine's Paso wasn't my fave either but it's the only video I could find of decent quality. Man, the producers are quick to take them down now.

Yah, I started watching first season but that big guy made it seem like a joke so lost interest, and only realized later that they WERE taking it seriously with it all. I did remember liking Artem tho, and Blake has since become a judge/choreographer in Canada. And I liked Nick, but I can't remember ANY of the girls so decided to leave them all out.

I agree with mostly everything but Chelsie, Jamie, Allison, Natalie and Natalli should be way closer to the top.

But great nonetheless.
