SYTYCDC3 - The Age of Majority

So You Think You Can Dance Canada - Season 3 - Top 18 Performance - Ep. 311
Judges: Jean-Marc Généreux, Tré Armstrong, Blake McGrath, Melissa Williams

I'm loving the girls but I'm still finding it hard to differentiate who is who at this point sometimes, or remember who some are. And while the boys this year are cute as buttons, is it me or do they all seem super boyish this season? (Not that I'm complaining, but just noting it).

Amanda Cleghorn and Denys Drozdyuk
Style: Quickstep
Choreographed by: Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin
Song: "Feelin' Good" - Colin James
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A

Wow, Denys went to Julliard? Damn. That explains a lot. He's sort of like the forgotten hero I feel here. I LOVE him but I keep forgetting he's around, not cause he's not memorable but he's almost like a pro, that he's beyond the competition. Of course, the fact that this is the second ballroom style he's gotten in 3 weeks, doesn't hurt, and that he killed last week's Contemporary.

So again, he looks like a pro here doing the quickstep, but it's the non-Quickstep moments shows that he has potential to be the dance star neede to win this show, with a star power attitude without the star power 'tude. There was a moment where he looked panicked but I think it was more for his partner than him, but other than that, he made that it look so easy.

Amanda is not a ballroom dancer but damn, she matched Denys step for quickstep. I really couldn't tell that this is not her style.

Here's the video of Amanda and Denys' Quickstep (via CTV):

Janick Arseneau and Shavar Blackwood
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Luther Brown
Song: "Lil Freak" - Usher feat. Nicki Minaj
Grade - Dance: B-
Grade - Girl: B+
Grade - Boy:: A-

I know Krump and Hip-Hop are different dance styles, but they are still in the same family, so two weeks in a row? Then again, Denys got ballroom twice already too.

I thought the two dancers did a good job, I can't really nitpick on anything, especially with Shavar. He looked great and showed how great he is in his own style.

Janick did well as well, especially for a white girl! And as Melissa said, seemed like she improved as the dance went on. I LOVED Janick in that first week with the Afro Jazz so I know she has some afro in her, so I'm glad that this helped erase the disaster of last week's Krump.

But overall I didn't love the dance but that may have been a combo of song and choreography, which felt very typical.

Here's the video of Janick and Shavar's Hip-Hop (via CTV):

Julia Harnett and Jesse Weafer
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Stacey Tookey
Song: "Falling" - Florence + the Machine
Grade - Dance: B-
Grade - Girl: B
Grade - Boy: B+

I keep forgetting Julia has a son. Damn, and her husband is cuuute. And she gets to dance with the adorable Jesse, what a lucky girl!

I thought Julia did a great job with her attempt at Contemporary, as she tried to pull her lines to stretch beyond some of her ballroom moves.

Jesse's not quite strong enough to do all those lifts and they seemed a bit laboured but he's a beautiful dancer and he has wonderful moments, and when he and Julia do connect, there's a world of possibilities there. And we know he's good and has so much potential.

If there's any problem, it might be that Julia seems way more mature then then boyish Jesse that it makes this couple a bit imbalanced.

I also didn't think this was Stacey's best work as it seemed to never quite take off. The whole dance seemed like a build up for something great and fantastic but it never happens here.

Here's the video of Julia and Jesse's Contemporary (via CTV):

Charlene Hart and Jeff Mortensen
Style: Hustle
Choreographed by: Maria Torres
Song: "That's Where The Happy People Go" - The Trammps
Grade - Dance: A
Grade - Girl: A
Grade - Boy: A-

I think Charlene stole the show here but I gotta give it to Jeff for spinning fast enough for spinning Charlene on his shouldes without holding her. Damn that was kinda Kristi Yamaguchi awesome.

But really, Charlene was just SOOO DAMN sparkly from her outfit to her smile to her energy and she just spun that out of control, and she looked so relaxed as she's being flipped and spun while giving that extra little detail that just made it look so smooth.

Jeff was quite solid here as Charlene's partner and while I thought he didn't have that extra bounce needed in those in-between steps, the fact that he spun and flipped and lifted his partner with such ease is still good enough for extra points.

Here's the video of Charlene and Jeff's Disco (via CTV):

Nathalie Heath and Mackenzie Green
Style: Cha Cha
Choreographed by: Gustavo Vargas
Song: "I Like It" - Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull
Grade - Dance: B
Grade - Girl: A-
Grade - Boy: A-

I wish the dance looked more difficult because I thought these two did a great job but the dance itself looked a little easy to do (not that it might have been. Don't ask me to do it!).

Nathalie and Mackenzie blew me away last week with their Hip-Hop and I they seem to be pretty versatile with very different styles so far, so I'm becoming big fans.

They look great together and I thought they made the dance look great with their energy and while I don't know what the rules of the Cha Cha are, the two seemed to make it smooth enough to look like they knew what they were doing.

Here's the video of Nathalie and Mackenzie's Cha Cha (via CTV):

Danielle Gardner and Sebastian Mersch
Style: Contemporary
Choreographed by: Sabrina Matthews
Song: "Gunnin'" - Hedley
Grade - Dance: B+
Grade - Girl: B+
Grade - Boy: B+

So is it required to have a Hedley song every week on this show? Not complaining. Just noticing that their songs are sort of perfect for the dances on this show. Sounds edgy even when they are ballads, without sounding schlocky like Nickleback.

Again, Sebastian doesn't seem to the have the strength to properly do lifts as a partnering male, but I like everything else he does, and again, he continues to remind me of a mini version of Robert Roldan.

Here's the video of Danielle and Sebastian's Contemporary (via CTV):

Kirsten Wicklund and Jera Wolfe
Style: Hip-Hop
Choreographed by: Sho-Tyme
Song: "Now That We Found Love" - Heavy D and the Boyz
Grade - Dance: B-
Grade - Girl: B-
Grade - Boy: C+

Oh, the 90's. How did we live through those years with a straight face?

I couldn't stop laughing here, and not really at the fault of the dancers, though Jera trying to look "down and with it" was kinda hilarious. I know he's a breaker but the oversized wardrobe didn't help and his big smile looked a bit ridiculous.

I couldn't really take this seriously. Poor Jera and Kirsten cause they didn't too bad with the actual steps, and when it was fast, it looked pretty decent, but it was just kind of a hot mess, though almost partially like it was on purpose.

Here's the video of Kirsten and Jera's Hip-Hop (via CTV):

Claudia Primeau and Edgar Gilbert-Reyes
Style: Lyrical Jazz
Choreographed by: Sean Cheeseman
Song: "Impossible" - Shontelle
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: B
Grade - Boy: A

Well, I'm SOOOO glad that Edgar wasn't bumped off last week cause DAMN, he was awesome here. He really carried the piece here, and carried Claudia, both literally and figuratively. Edgar was splendid here, in both technique (whether he faked it or not) and emotions. Plus he made those lifts and spins go so smoothly.

I'm actually even more sad that Bree was cut last week because she was one of my faves and she would would have killed this with Edgar, who I just think had a bad luck piece last week.

Here's the video of Claudia and Edgar's Lyrical Jazz (via CTV):

Kloe Schultz and Jonathan Arsenault
Style: West Coast Swing
Choreographed by: Benji Schwimmer
Song: "Clocks" - Vitamin String Quartet
Grade - Dance: A-
Grade - Girl: C
Grade - Boy: A-

I love that Jonathan doesn't look like he would have the body that he does. That makes me love him even more. (Not that he's not good looking I mean, more that he seems too cute and sweet to rock a hard body like that).

And maybe it was because I kept starring at that rock hard body but I felt he did better on the connections than Kloe who looked a little stiff here (oddly enough). (Oh good, Melissa agrees).

But Jonathan seemed to help support all the complicated twists and turns and where Kloe looked a bit nervous trying to get them all down.

And as all the judges kept reiterating, that was a fun West Coast Swing routine that didn't look like a West Coast Swing routine.

Here's the video of Kloe and Jonathan's West Coast Swing (via CTV):

The Final Roundup:

Ranking the Couples:
Best of the Night: Amanda and Denys' Quickstep
2nd: Charlene and Jeff's Hustle
3rd: Nathalie and Mackenzie's Cha Cha
4th: Claudia and Edgar's Lyrical Jazz
5th: Kloe and Jonathan's West Coast Swing
6th: Danielle and Sebastian's Contemporary
7th: Julia and Jesse's Contemporary
8th: Janick and Shavar's Hip-Hop
9th - Worst of the Night: Kirsten and Jera's Hip-Hop

My Predictions
Predicted Bottom 3 Couples:
Kirsten and Jera
Claudia and Edgar
Julia and Jesse

Should Go Home: Claudia and ... Jera?

I just realized I like all the remaining guys at this point and I need another round to determine who should be cut. Since I don't think Jera's poor showing this week is entirely his fault.

Going Home: Claudia and Jesse

While it's still too early to fully rank all the dancers, and I'll naturally give the boys, especially the cute boys, a higher ranking than I probably should, here's an unfair ranking of the Top 18 dancers at this point (based on everything so far):

1. Denys
2. Amanda
3. Charlene
4. Mackenzie
5. Jonathan
6. Jesse
7. Edgar
8. Sebastian
9. Nathalie
10. Janick
11. Julia
12. Danielle
13. Jera
14. Kloe
15. Shavar
16. Jeff
17. Kirsten
18. Claudia

Or something like that. It sort of gets muddled in the middle and I could pretty much switch the whole thing around and have a case for it.
