SYTYCD8 - Citys of Dreams

So You Think You Can Dance - Season 8 - Salt Lake City and New York City Auditions - Ep. 802
Salt Lake City Audition - Judges: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Robin Antin
New York City Audition - Judges: Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Jason Gilkison

Entertainment Weekly totally has it down. Sometimes I think I may like a dancer just based on their musical choices. Every dancer I loved, I also loved their song choice tonight. Even more so than last weeks.

Anyways, it's the tale of two cities tonight. First up, Sal Tlay Ka Siti (reference here).

Salt Lake City Auditions: - Choregraphers: Katee Shean and Will Wingfield (S4)

Devon McCullough and Micah Clark, the steppers. Not sure how they'll fare elsewhere but I've always loved stepping.

Chyna Smith - Cute blonde who resembles several former SYTYCDers, and performs a piece by Allison Holker, and does a great job. She has such a jubilant personality but her dancing is committed.

Annie Gratton and father Francois - The redhead (amongst SLC's blondes) doesn't blow me away but her contemporary seems pretty good enough, but I really liked her personality and I think given some good choreography, could do well here. Her father was awesome.

Chase Thomas - Naked guy seems like he's gonna be a weird one but ends up wowing me with some amazing technical moves and strength in his control. The muscular yet thin frame actually has some purpose, but he adds a lyrical emotion to his performance that was unexpected based on his undies.

Others dancers of note: Tadd Gadduang (has crazy tricks bouncing on one hand or walking down stairs upside down, and gets thru to Vegas I think partly from the audience enthusiasm, but doubt he'll get much further since there wasn't much actual dancing), Samantha Hiller (amnesia girl who is good but not good enough)

New York City Auditions: - Choregraphers: Katee Shean and Will Wingfield (S4)

Samara “Princess Lockaroo” Cohen - Dances her own style of wacking, which seems to be some kind of superfast arm spinning thing, and considering her costume and oddness (including naming herself Princess Lockaroo), turns out strangely cool and awesome. She's quite clever in throwing in spins and splits while doing her wacking tricks. I kinda like this chick.

Brandon Jones - Lyrical Contemporary that has a passion and artistry to it. It still looks like every other contemporary piece we've seen on this show, but there's something about this guy that I like.

Mary Kate Sheehan - Irish dancing usually scares me but there's a lot of ballet in this and the fact that Mary Kate seems lovely, I really want her to excel in Krumping and Hip Hop so that she can do well in this.

Virgil “Lil O” Gadson - Impressive Pop'n'Locking, Breaking etc. Nigel calls him a great "performer" and his smile and vibe just makes me want to pick him up and put him in my pocket. Adorable and fierce performance.

Jess LeProtto - Has a bit of that arrogant Drama Club vibe behind that new smile (combined with the youthful ego), and while he totally pulls out the jazz hands, his musical dancing is actually quite good and he's quite entertaining. But I will agree with the judges in that he lacks that full connection to the audience. It all seems too rehearsed.

Other dancers of note:
Brian Henry (Cocky Krumper but he's good and when he makes it to Vegas after choreo and cries for his mama, there's hope yet to absolve his cocky sins), Kristen Dobson (with partner Susan Travis doing Latin ballroom but I was a bit underwhelmed (though she's only been dancing for 3 years, which actually is impressive then), but she makes it through choreo to Vegas), Robert Taylor, Jr (Woooo man impresses the judges (or crowd who make it impossible for the judges to not listen) enough to get him to Vegas but while there were some cool tricks and showmanship, I didn't really feel there was enough, at least not straight through to Vegas, but what do I know?)

Meanwhile, CTV started airing commercials for So You Think You Can Dance Canada Season 4, which starts June 20th. JUNE 20th??? ALREADY??? Does this mean they're going to cross over the 2 SYTYCD's? Isn't that a bit too much?

Then again, seeing Amanda and Jonathan on the commercials again made me excited, since I feel the Canadian dancers are strong, and there are better choreographers up here generally speaking (and Mia Michaels will be returning to the Canadian version this summer). (Though our host and judges are a whole other matter).
